How to get your business on Google Maps

5 min read

When someone searches "hair salon near me" or "plumber nearby", Google shows them a map with three or four businesses. If yours isn't there, you don't exist for that customer. The good news: getting on Google Maps is free and you can do it yourself in an afternoon. Here's how, step by step, plus how to make your business not just appear but show up ahead of the competition.

To appear on Google Maps you need to create or claim your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business), fill in all your business details, and verify that you're the owner. Once verified, your business starts showing up on Google Maps and in Search within a few days.

What is Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your business on Google Maps and in Google searches. It's what appears at the top or on the right when someone searches your company's name, with your name, address, hours, phone, photos, and reviews.

Until recently it was called Google My Business and was managed through its own app. Google retired it. Now everything is done directly from Google Maps and Search, no separate app.

How to add your business to Google Maps step by step

  1. Create or sign in to your Google account. If you have Gmail, you're set.
  2. Go to business.google.com/add or open Google Maps and search for your business name.
  3. Claim or create the listing. If Google already has one for your business (sometimes they're generated automatically), you'll see the option to claim it. If it doesn't exist, create it from scratch.
  4. Choose the right category. This is the single most important step. The category tells Google which searches to show you for. "Italian restaurant" is not the same as "Pizza restaurant". Pick the one that describes exactly what you do.
  5. Fill in every field. Your name as it appears on your sign, your address (or service area if you have no storefront), phone, website, and real hours.
  6. Verify your business. Google will ask you to confirm you're the owner. Depending on your case, you can do it by video, phone, email, or a postcard with a code sent to your address.

How to verify your business on Google

Verification is the step many people leave half done, and without it your business doesn't show up. Google will offer one or several options depending on your business type and country.

  • Video. You record a short video showing the premises, the sign, and proof that you run the business.
  • Phone or SMS. You receive a code at the business number.
  • Email. You receive the code at a company address.
  • Postcard. Google mails a letter with a code to your physical address, usually takes a few days.

Once you enter the code or Google approves the video, your listing goes live.

Appearing isn't the same as ranking first

This is where most businesses stop short. Having a listing means you exist. Showing up among the first results when someone searches for your service in your area is a different job, and it has a name: local SEO.

Google decides which businesses to show first based on three things: how relevant your listing is to the search, how close the customer is, and how well known your business is. You can influence all three.

  • Relevance. The right category, a clear description, and well-detailed services.
  • Proximity. You can't move your actual location, but you can pair it with a well-defined service area.
  • Prominence. Reviews (and replies to reviews), updated photos, posts, and a website that explains what you do and where.

Reviews are probably the strongest lever and the most neglected one. A business with thirty recent, well-answered reviews beats one with three, even if it's a bit farther away.

If you want your listing and your website working together to rank in your area, that's part of what I do with my web & SEO service.

Typical mistakes local businesses make

  • Choosing a generic or wrong category. The first visibility killer.
  • Not finishing verification and leaving the listing half done.
  • Having a different name, address, and phone on your website, Instagram, and listing. Google needs them to match.
  • Stuffing the business name with keywords, like "Plumber 24h Cheap Near Me". Google penalizes it. Use your real name.
  • Creating the listing and abandoning it. A listing with no new photos, no reviews, and outdated hours loses positions.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to be on Google Maps?

Yes. Creating and maintaining a Google Business Profile costs nothing. Google doesn't charge to appear on the map or in Search.

How long until my business appears?

Once verified, it usually starts showing within a few days. Postcard verification is what can stretch the process the most.

Do I need a physical storefront?

Not always. If you work at customers' homes or across an area (a plumber, a photographer, a home service), you can set a service area and hide your address.

There's a listing for my business I didn't create. What do I do?

Claim it. Google sometimes generates listings automatically. Open it, request ownership, and verify it so nobody else can manage it.

How do I get ahead of my competitors?

By working on local SEO: the right category, a steady flow of reviews, an active listing, and a website well positioned for your area.
